Galathea Bay National Park

Introduction:

Galathea National Park is situated in the union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Galathea is a part of the well known Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve which is made up of two national parks, the Galathea national park and the Campbell Bay National park, the two parks being separated by a 12 km long forest. Galathea National park is spread over an area of approximately 110 kilometers. This Park is declared as a National Park in 1992. This park has a rich variety of unique species of Flora and Fauna.

History:

Galathea Bay National Park is a part of Greater Nicobar Biosphere Reserve and was gazette as a National Park of India in 1992.

Flora:

Galathea National Park has a rich variety of beautiful and rare plants. This park has around 1300 variety of unseen plants in India and consists of a total number of 2200 variety of plants out of which 200 are endemic. This park is largely consist of Tropical and Subtropical moist broadleaf forests.

Fauna:

The richness of wildlife is found in Galathea National Park. It has a wide range of unique species including the endangered too out of which the reticulated python, Malaysian Box Turtle, giant leather back Turtle and Nicobar tree shrews comes in to the category of endangered species. Other than this a large number of unique species like Sea Cow, Swiftlet, Salt water Crocodile etc. Galathea National Park has a total number of 50 mammals, 26 varities of rodents, 14 species of bats, 270 species of birds and 225 species of butterflies can be found here.

Activities:

Activities like sea walks, boating, snorkeling and scuba diving can be done here. For Bird watchers and nature watchers, Galathea National Park is best place to go around. This Park also serves as a best place for picnic.

Best time to visit:

Galathea National Park is open throughout the year. Monsoons are slushy and the area which comes under the Tropical region has only two seasons, summer and monsoons. Usually the temperature remain 22 degree C in summer and 30 degree C in winter. Best time to visit the park is during the months of October to April.

Timings:

Visitors are advised to get in touch with officials of the sanctuary for complete information entry timings and fee. Usually this Park remains open from 12:00 am to 12:00 pm.

Getting There:

By Air: The nearest airports are in Port Blair city in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chennai and Visakhapatnam cities in India.

By Rail: There is no railway station in Great Nicobar Island. Nearest railway station is Chennai Railway Station in Chennai city of Tamil Nadu, which is approximately 1,623 km (1008 miles) away from the Island.

By Road: The Galathea National Park is not connected by roads. Visitors can reach the sanctuary through ferries provided by authorities from Port Blair. The GNP in Andaman and Nicobar Islands is approximately 523 km (324 miles) away from Port Blair in Andaman archipelago, 1,623 km (1008 miles) away from Chennai and 1,647 km (1023 miles) away from Visakhapatnam cities in India.
