Indira Gandhi Zoological Park

Introduction:

Indira Gandhi Zoological Park is situated in Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India amidst the scenic Eastern Ghats of India. This park has a rich variety of unique species of Flora and Fauna. The Park is spread over an area of 625 acres of land and is managed by the Forest Department of Government of Andhra Pradesh. . On an average, over five lakh visitors visit the Park every year.

History:

Indira Gandhi Zoological Park is one of the largest Zoo in Andhra Pradesh was declared as National Park of India in 1972 at the city outskirts of Visakhapatnam city in a 250 hector area. Indira Gandhi Zoological Park is named after the former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi. On 19th May 1977 was the day Indira Gandhi Zoological Park opened up for the people.

Animals and exhibits:

The richness of wildlife is found in Indira Gandhi Zoological Park. Indira Gandhi Zoological Park has around 80 species of birds, animals and reptiles. Hippopotamus & Crocodiles are the special attraction of the Park. Different species of animals like Indian Tiger, White Tiger, Lions, Panthers, Rhesus, Bennet, Stump Tailed Monkey, Baboons, Asiatic Leopard, Himalayan Black Bear, Indian Porcupine and Giant Squirrel residing in the Park. The Park is also home for various birds like Peafowl, Red Jungle Fowl, Partridges, Golden Pheasant, Silver Pheasant, Ring Necked Pheasant, Doves, Parakeets, Mumias and Budgeri. Other attraction of the wildlife inside the park includes reptiles like Estaurino, Crocodile, Marsh Crocodile, Marine Turtle, Terrapins, Starred Tortoise and Monitor Lizards.

Attractions:

A new attraction to the Zoo Park, a Special Mini-Train was installed to facilitate people to watch the wild life in an open toy train on Jan 1, 2000.  Other attractions include a Biosphere learning center and a Library inside the Zoo Park near the Canteen.

Facilities:

Drinking water RO’s with purified cool water at many locations inside the park. There are also benches, shelters and wheel chairs available at the office. Battery operated eco-friendly vehicles are available @200/head for roaming in the zoo.

Timings and Fee:

Visitors are advised to get in touch with officials of the Park for complete information entry timings and fee. Usually this Park remains open from 09:00 am to 05:00 pm. The zoo remains closed on Mondays.
