Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

Introduction:

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary or Vembanad Bird Sanctuary is located at Kumarakom in Kottayam district in Kerala state, South India. The Park is spread over an area of 14 acres of land. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is considered as the most preferred area for the Bird lovers and Bird watchers.

History:

Kumarakom bird sanctuary is that this preserved forest was developed in a rubber plantation by an Englishman and was formerly known as Baker’s Estate.

Birds:

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a perfect place for Bird watchers. More than 500 species of Birds found in this Park. The migratory birds include Parrots, Teals, Larks, Flycatchers and Wood Beetles.  It is the best place to watch birds in their natural habitats and you may even get a chance to spot a new species of bird.

Mammals:

Several species of animals can also be found in Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary like tigers, nilgiri tahr, wild pigs, leopards, bears, elephants, civet cats, lion-tailed macaque, deer, monkeys, , squirrels and Malabar giant squirrel.

Reptiles:

Along with Birds and Mammals various varieties of reptiles can also be visit in this park including snakes like Python, Cobra, Ciper, Rat Snake, Iguana and a few varieties of wild lizards too.

Activities:

Bird Watching is the best activity to do in this Sanctuary. It is a haven for Bird lovers.

Best time to visit:

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is open throughout the year. November to March is the best time to visit the park.

Visitors are advised to get in touch with officials of the sanctuary for complete information entry timings and fee.

Getting There:

Air: The Cochin International Airport is the nearest one, which is at a distance of 70 kms from the Muhamma boat jetty.

Rail: The nearest Rail head is at Kottayam which is connected to all the major cities of India by several express trains.

Road: Kottayam is 14 km from Kumarakom and connected to rest of the country of India by both State Highways and National Highways. From here taxis and auto rickshaws are available for reaching the sanctuary.
