History of Kedarnath Temple:

According to legend, the temple was built by the Pandavas during the Mahabharata era. It is believed that they wanted to seek forgiveness from Lord Shiva for killing their own kith and kin during the war. Lord Shiva, however, was not willing to meet them and disguised himself as a bull. The Pandavas recognized him and tried to catch him, but he disappeared into the ground, leaving his hump behind. The hump later became the Lingam (an abstract representation of Lord Shiva) and the temple was built around it.
