The city of Agra is situated on the river banks of the river Yamuna and is said to be the 19th most populous city in India. The city was even mentioned in the Epic Mahabharata as Agrevana which means ‘the border of the forest’. It is said in stories that the city was founded by Raja Badal Singh. Apart from that, Agra was a very important part of the Mughal Empire and it was named Akbarabad. The city was the capital under kings like Akbar, Jahangir, and even Shah Jahan. Not just that, the city of Agra is even known as the birthplace of the religion Din-i Allah which is still followed by many. In 1935, the city witnessed several government activities as it was made a princely state of British India.

Taj Mahal :

The very first place to visit in Agra is the Taj Mahal. There is not much to tell about it as every fact about it is very famous and known to everyone. It was built by Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. Today it is one of the seven wonders of India. It is situated on the banks of the Yamuna River. The next wonderful place is the Agra Fort. This was built by the great king Akbar in the year 1565. It includes the Moti masjid, Diwan-e-khas which are halls for public and private audiences, Jahangir’s palace, Shish Mahal, and many more notable buildings. The Fort was once renovated by Shah Jahan and converted into a palace.

Fatehpur Sikri :

Fatehpur Sikri is another place that should not be missed when you go to Agra which was again built by Akbar when he had moved his capital. Other places that come on the must-visit list include Itimad-Ud-Dulah, Akbar’s tomb, Guru Ka Tal, Mankameshwar Temple, Jama Masjid, Mariam’s Tomb, Mughal Heritage Walk, Keetham Lake, and many more. Being the capital of the Mughal Empire once, the city of Agra has a big list of places that you need to visit and appreciate the skill and artistic view of the buildings and structures built here.
