Ayodhya Travel Destination

Ayodhya, nestled on the banks of the sacred Saryu River in Uttar Pradesh, India, is a city steeped in mythology and reverence. Revered as the birthplace of Lord Rama, the central figure of the Hindu epic Ramayana, Ayodhya holds immense significance for Hindus worldwide.

The city's history stretches back millennia, with archaeological evidence suggesting settlements dating back to the 12th century BCE.  Ayodhya finds mention in various ancient Hindu texts, including the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.  For centuries, it flourished as a prosperous kingdom, a center of learning and culture.

The most prominent landmark in Ayodhya, and the site of much recent attention, is the Ram Janmabhoomi complex. Believed to be Lord Rama's birthplace, the site has been a center of pilgrimage for centuries.  In 1992, the Babri Masjid, a mosque built on the site by Mughal emperor Babur, was demolished, sparking a religious controversy.  Following a landmark Supreme Court verdict in 2019, the land was awarded for the construction of a Ram temple.

The construction of the Ram Mandir (literally, Rama Temple) is currently underway.  Planned to be a grand monument, it signifies the culmination of a long-held desire for many Hindus.  The intricate carvings, sprawling complex, and towering shikhars (spires) are expected to showcase traditional Indian architecture and craftsmanship.

Beyond the Ram Janmabhoomi complex, Ayodhya offers a wealth of historical and cultural experiences. The Kanak Bhawan, a sprawling palace, houses artifacts from the Ayodhya kingdom. The ASI Museum displays ancient sculptures and relics, shedding light on the city's rich past.  Ayodhya also boasts numerous temples dedicated to various deities, including Hanumangarhi, a prominent shrine dedicated to Lord Hanuman, Rama's loyal devotee.

A visit to Ayodhya is not just a pilgrimage but a journey into the heart of Hindu mythology and culture.  Witnessing the ongoing construction of the Ram Mandir and experiencing the city's sacred atmosphere offers a glimpse into the enduring faith and traditions that define Ayodhya's significance.

October to March offers pleasant weather. However, major festivals like Diwali see larger crowds. Consider the shoulder seasons (April-June or July-September) if crowds are less of a concern.

Fly into Lucknow International Airport (LKO) and then take a taxi, cab, or bus to Ayodhya. Trains and buses also connect Ayodhya to major Indian cities.

Ayodhya offers a variety of hotels, guesthouses, and pilgrim-centric dharamshalas to suit all budgets.

What should I wear while visiting Ayodhya?
