Jewar Airport Noida - Completion Date, Cost, Connectivity and Plan

Jewar International Airport Noida

The Jewar International Airport, also known as Noida International Airport, is an ambitious project currently under construction near the town of Jewar in Uttar Pradesh, India. Designed to serve the National Capital Region (NCR), this upcoming airport aims to alleviate the burden on Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport by handling its increasingly heavy air traffic. Once completed, it is set to become not only India's largest airport but also Asia's biggest. The implementation of this massive endeavor falls under the jurisdiction of the Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL), acting on behalf of the Government of Uttar Pradesh. To fund and manage its development, a public-private partnership model has been adopted. In 2019, Flughafen Zürich AG - renowned for operating Zurich Airport in Switzerland - successfully secured a bid to construct and operate this state-of-the-art facility for a remarkable period of 40 years.

Jewar Airport - Overview

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is currently involved in the construction of a 31-kilometer-long greenfield highway from the airport to Sector-65, Faridabad on the Delhi Mumbai Expressway. This project aims to provide efficient connectivity for travelers between these two locations. In Jewar, there are ambitious plans underway to establish a remarkable two-runway airport by 2024. However, this is just the beginning as the future vision includes expanding it into an enormous eight-runway airport spread across an impressive 7,200 acres of land. The proposed expansion will enable this airport to handle a substantial number of passengers annually, starting with around 12 million and eventually accommodating somewhere between 60 and 120 million passengers per annum over a span of three decades. It's worth noting that Jewar Airport will be the third commercial airport within the National Capital Region after Indira Gandhi International Airport and Hindon Airport, further enhancing regional air travel options for millions in the area.

Jewar International Airport Noida - History

The proposed Jewar International Airport Noida, also known as the Taj International Aviation Hub (TIAH), was initially proposed by then Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Rajnath Singh in 2001. The project aimed to establish a greenfield airport in Jewar near Greater Noida, adjacent to the Yamuna Expressway. After receiving clearance from the Central Government for its techno-feasibility report in April 2003, plans were set to construct the airport with an estimated cost of ₹5000 crores by 2007-2008. However, during the UPA regime, the project was put on hold due to concerns that it would be within 150 km of Delhi's existing greenfield airport. Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) operator GMR Group strongly opposed another international airport within this radius, fearing potential traffic and revenue impact. Additionally, GMR held the right of first refusal (RoFR) for any new airport within 150 km of IGI, ensuring preference in bidding if their price fell within 10% of the lowest bidder's offer.

When the Akhilesh Yadav-led government was formed in Uttar Pradesh in 2012, one of their proposed actions was to shelve the project for Jewar International Airport Noida. Instead, they suggested constructing a new international airport in Agra. However, after careful consideration, in June 2013, the State Government decided on Kurrikupa village near Hirangaon, Tundla in the Firozabad district as the suitable site for this ambitious airport project. Unfortunately, their plans hit a hurdle when objections were raised by the Defence Ministry regarding this location near Tundla. To overcome this setback and keep their vision alive, it took another year before a resolution was reached. In November 2014, identifying an alternative solution to accommodate this significant infrastructure development became imperative for the state government. Therefore they allocated land near Etmadpur as the new proposed site for Jewar International Airport Noida."

In 2014, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) coming into power at the Centre, the Jewar International Airport Noida project took a significant turn. After being shifted back to Jewar, the Civil Aviation Ministry granted clearance for a new airport on an extensive plot of 2,200 acres (890 ha) in June 2015. Subsequently, in June 2016, the Union Ministry of Defence (MoD) also approved the project. The Uttar Pradesh government received in-principle approval from the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) in May 2018 to proceed with building this ambitious airport facility. However, challenges arose when Hisar Airport sought competing Union Cabinet approval for constructing another airport serving the National Capital Region (NCR). This scenario led to concerns about prolonged return on investment and diluted viability for both airports as they now had to vie for attention and resources.

Jewar Airport Noida - Latest News

The latest Jewar Airport news reveals that the first test flight is set to take off in March 2024, much earlier than its scheduled opening at the end of 2024. In preparation for this milestone, Union Home and Civil Aviation officials have been engaged in meetings over the past two weeks to discuss the airport's roadmap. It is expected that a renowned airline such as Indigo or SpiceJet will conduct this test flight, which will include landing and departure procedures while being closely monitored by officials and experts. To ensure all operational requirements are met, including the Required Navigation Performance Procedure, the airport is currently undergoing runway layering work with plans to install air navigation services starting in December. The completion of these activities would allow for the readiness of the airside by March, facilitating the operation of a successful test flight. During one such meeting focused on immigration and security-related developments, it was revealed that although a formal order has yet to be issued, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) will be responsible for guarding the airport according to information provided by the Minister of Union Home and Civil Aviation.

Jewar Airport: India’s Biggest Airport with Six Runways

As per the Jewar Project Report approved by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Noida International Airport will have six runways once it becomes operational with all the expansions completed. The report includes the airport expansion with two more runways depending upon the availability of land. Jewar International Airport will be India’s largest and World’s fourth-largest airport with six runways.

Jewar Airport Master Plan

Find below the image of the Jewar Airport map disclosed by the Yamuna Expressway Authority.

Jewar Airport Construction Phases

Jewar Airport Construction Phases involve a systematic and well-planned approach to ensure the successful development of this ambitious project. The construction plan has been meticulously divided into four phases, each serving a specific purpose.

Phase 1 focuses on land acquisition and site preparation, which includes clearing the area, leveling the ground, and setting up temporary infrastructure for workers and equipment. This phase lays the foundation for subsequent stages by creating a suitable environment for construction activities.

In Phase 2, primary infrastructure such as roads, drainage systems, water supply networks, and electricity connections will be established to support the airport's operations in the long run. Additionally, this phase involves constructing terminal buildings with state-of-the-art facilities to enhance the passenger experience while adhering to modern architectural standards.

Moving on to Phase 3 entails building auxiliary structures like cargo terminals, maintenance hangars, and aircraft parking bays along with associated facilities such as fuel storage systems and fire stations. These structures are crucial components that contribute towards efficient air transportation services at Jewar Airport.

Finally, Phase 4 focuses on completing all remaining works necessary for operational readiness including installing navigation aids like runway lighting systems or air traffic control towers before conducting comprehensive testing processes to ensure safety measures meet international standards. Overall these four phases outline a detailed roadmap underpinning every aspect of Jewar Airport's construction journey from inception till its eventual completion.

Jewar Airport Connectivity

The Jewar Airport Connectivity project is set to revolutionize travel in the Delhi National Capital Region. With its strategic location, the Noida International Airport will seamlessly connect to multiple highways, ensuring swift and convenient access for travelers. The Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Expressway, a major arterial road, will provide a direct link from the heart of Delhi to the airport, reducing travel time significantly. Additionally, the Ghaziabad-Aligarh Expressway (National Highway 34) will offer another efficient route for commuters traveling from Ghaziabad and Aligarh regions. These well-connected highways will not only enhance accessibility but also foster economic growth by facilitating trade and commerce within the region. The Jewar Airport Connectivity plan marks a significant milestone in infrastructure development and promises an exciting future for both passengers and businesses alike.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken a comprehensive approach to ensure efficient connectivity for the upcoming Jewar International Airport.

To provide seamless access, NHAI has planned to construct a highway that will connect the airport to Delhi-Mumbai Expressway via Faridabad.

Additionally, Noida International Airport will be linked with Yamuna Expressway in DayanatPur Village in Jewar and KGP Expressway at Mohna Village in Ballabhgarh.

Furthermore, NHAI aims to establish a connection between Jewar Airport and Noida Metro through the Greater Noida route as well as with Delhi Metro via the Faridabad-Ballabgarh-Jewar route.

Notably, Uttar Pradesh Government is also considering an ambitious Monorail Project that would link Jewar Airport with Delhi while Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) plans to introduce India's first pod taxi service connecting the airport with Noida Film City.

YEIDA intends to develop two new expressways and a rail link connecting Chola Railway Station in Bulandshahr further expanding Jewar Airport's reach across different transport networks.
